TUTORIAL QUESTIONS 4

Psychologies Barry Schwartz takes aim at a central tenet of western societies: freedom of choice.

1. How is the idea of "choice" a value that is built into consumer-capitalist society?

The idea of choice in the context of a consumer-capitalist society means to have the freedom to choose, to have more options in their purchases. Just like when a person is purchasing a t shirt, he or she would be able to choose from many brands such a Armani exchange, calvin klein, burberry and so on. Factors that influence the choice would be prices, discounts, additional gifts and other external factors. Internal factors lie on the functions of the item that wants to be purchases, generally comparing it to another similar product.

2. What does it mean in terms of hegemony?

The term hegemony is defined as "Leadership or dominance, esp. by one country or social group". The wealthy class might be said to have hegemony over the poor because of their ability to use money to influence many aspects socially and politically. Thus, there is a contradiction between the propensity for a powerful state to take unilateral action in promoting its self-defined interest and its desire to maintain long term systemic stability. Having too much power in everything would cause corruption and laundering which will then lead to chaos and mess in the society.

3
. Why is it important for hegemony that we don't question its legitimacy? Why don't we?

Hegemony's set of laws are permanent , it is restricted by law and nothing could be done. medium class or low class people do not have money to contribute therefore, they are unable to influence theH government. Hence, to stay away from trouble, we have to involve in part of legitimacy, be in full control towards legitimacy.

4. What is "the paradox of choice"?

A paradox can be defined as a seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true" and choice is "An act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities".
Combining both words, it means that sometimes, things are just not what they seem to be. For example, the thought of having more options, more choices is thought to be better as one might be able to find an option that is tailor made to one's own preference. However, there are times when having too many choices lead to complications just like how Schwartz gave his example of having too many choices of jeans but he ended up having difficulties in choosing.

TUTORIAL QUESTIONS 3

1. EXAMINE CLASS REPRESENTATIONS FROM AMERICAN TELEVISION'S BEGINNINGS TO TODAY'S SITCOMS. REALITY SHOWS, POLICE DRAMAS AND DAY TIME TALK SHOWS.

During the old days of american television, only the 'white' american will be portrayed. Eventually, other races in american television became more diverse and different, such as the addition of asians and also blacks as actors and actresses. however in most, the white people would be shown as hero's, main characters, protagonists, and the good guys. However, asians or the blacks would be given minor roles or antagonists roles, or would be shown as bad guys and be killed of very fast, giving them little screentime. Today, the world is more modern and we see black people such as Will Smith as the main hero and character in movies such as I am legend, and Men in Black.

2. WHAT IS THE AMERICAN DREAM AND HOW HAS IT BEEN POTRAYED ON TELEVISION? WHO HAS IT EXCLUDED AND WHY??

Taken from the World English Dictionary, the American Dream is defined as the notion that the American social, economic, and political system makes success possible for every individual.
It is where the capitalist system brings joy, perfect health and wealth to every American. It is the thought of having perfection in reality such as a married couple having one son and one daughter. It is shown by the media that to make the American Dream a reality, one must simply work and dedicate themselves to their work as well as their country. If that is achieved then time is the only factor left.

3. HOW DO MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS OF CLASS REFLECT THE LARGER SOCIAL SYSTEM AND SOCIAL INEQUALITY??

The media representations of class as a reflection of the larger social system and social inequality is somewhat true. The only difference is that media tends to over-exaggerate certain points but that is how they make things clear. However, there are times when they portray a form of biasness, such as having the white men having all the power and the minorities such as asians and black people having little to no power.

4. HOW IS THE WORKING CLASS PORTRAYED WHEN IT HAS BEEN REPRESENTED??

The working class are often shown to be struggling not only in their work life but also their social life. They seem as if they are really having trouble making ends meet. stereotypes such as terrible bosses can be seen such as being demanding, unrealistic, cruel and sadistic. Another example would be hot female secretaries working at offices with perfect bodies and beautiful faces . And then we also see working men in roles such as businessmen, lawyers and such, whereas females rarely are seen in those roles.

5. WHAT ARE THE STRUGGLES FACED IN TRYING TO GET A SHOW ABOUT WORKING CLASS PEOPLE ON TELEVISION??

Generally, the idea about portraying real people and real work situations can be very tough not only because of timing issues but as well as not wanting to portray their true selves. One way or another, what you see in reality televisions are somewhat of a fabrication of what they truly are and that is a fact. No one wants to be seen in a bad light, especially on nationwide television broadcasts. For example some of the things we see about working class people might be true, for example, they show the good side such as bright comfy offices, nice bosses, great workmates , an easy and not stressful life at work. However, in reality they do not show the negative sides like horrible bosses, backstabbing workmates, and stressful job situations police and firemen rescue jobs.

6. HOW ARE RACE AND GENDER INTERTWINED WITH CLASS ON TELEVISION?

As for race, the white people are often shown to be rich, high integrity and classy kind of people where as the minorities are often shown to be poor, the evil person and the trashy kind of people.
Minorities would be like asians and black people as usual as seen in movies and tv series. Even if they are not portrayed in bad light, they still do not get as much screen time or lines or roles as compared to their white american or british counterparts.
As for gender, the men are often shown to be the breadwinners, the heroes, the ones in power basically. The women are often shown to be weak, similar functions to a maid and belong in the kitchen. A good example for this would be the TV series shows suits, where the main male characters Harvey and Mike, are high flying, professional and capable lawyers in New york, whereas the female characters like Donna and Rachel are just assistants and a paralegal. However, in the movie, there is also jessica who is the head managing senior partner of the firm which means even Harvey and Mike are below her. So, its true that women are not always given the heroine and powerful roles, but in this Suits series, Jessica is an exception.

TURORIAL QUESTIONS 2

1. WHAT IS MEDIA CONCENTRATION AND CONGLOMERATION? HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR OR DIFFERENT TO EACH OTHER?

Media concentration is a process that makes lesser and lesser people have control over the media most likely to avoid complications as it is easier to make decisions with said media when there are fewer people to consult. Media conglomeration is the process of gathering as many media content / media shares by one single entity such as the Walt Disney Company. They are different in a sense where one is to gather as many forms of media as possible and another is to have more control over it by getting lesser people have power over a certain media.

2. WHAT IS THE POLITICAL IMPACT, IF ANY, OF CONCENTRATED CORPORATE OWNERSHIP OF NEWS AND OTHER FORMS OF MEDIA?

Political impact is like when government has a big hold or influence on the media, so that means whatever the media publishes or shares, the main influence behind it is the political parties for example. like newspapers and TV stations are good examples. whatever the TV or newspapers will show it will be pro government, all the good and positive things bout the political they will say, all the bad things they will hide, and probably distort the ugly truth. corporate owners of these media will obviously be careful in what they say and put in their TV and newspapers so they don't offend the government. mostly they will make sure all their content pleases the government . so, it can be said, that political impact is very real and serious and is happening in many countries and also our country Malaysia. so, all the good positive things bout our current government we always see on paper and TV ( dunno whether all is true or not ) and the bad things bout our government we never seem to see on paper or tv. so sad.

3. WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEDIA OWNERSHIP AND DIVERSITY IN MEDIA CONTENT? COMPARE AND CONTRAST THIS RELATIONSHIP IN THE NEWS AND POPULAR MUSIC INDUSTRIES.

The more media content being owned, the wider the variety in media content. this means if u are a big and powerful media company, means u have more resources and money and all, thus the company. has more media content. so much variety. Take for example the Universal Music Group. they have so so so many labels thus they have so many artist all producing different genres of music and stuff so that means a lot of variety and a lot of revenue is generated. They have big and powerful roster of artists such as the Black Eyed Peas and 50 Cent and Justin Bieber,  their content is music is diversified, allowing for more choices and in return, higher sales as compared to other record labels. because they are so big and powerful and rich, so they can have so much variety and diversity in their productions, media content. only with their huge ownership they can have so much variety of content.

TUTORIAL QUESTIONS 1

1. Explain how the influence of mass media extends beyond what we know to include how we relate to the social world.

Mass media is very wide, not everything can be published 100% facts or truth. Not every news can be published by the media since there are so many news. Mass media does agenda setting to make us all to see what the media wants us to see, for example the good and positive things. or how to view a situation, positively or negatively. Mass media for example such as tv shows can help us relate to the social world . for example, tv series such as desperate housewives or one tree hill or 90210 all have elements in their series which we all can relate too. elements would be such as school lifestyle, marriage life, friends , money, etc

2. Fill in the elements of the "media and social world" model below and briefly explain how they relate to each other (refer to slide on blank version of Media Model).

Media and the social world” are two different medium with two different purposes. Media are mediums which includes television, radio or even newspaper which is basically providing information, news and etc. Social world involves social networking such as Facebook and Twitter where people from all over the world are connected via the social tool whereas people from the media are connected emotionally but may not necessary means physically.

3. How does the presence of media affect your life? How would it be different without mass media?

For me presence of media has its upsides and downsides. upsides would be like it helps me connect to a lot of people online, entertainment, convenience, cure boredom . downsides are like it can make me less sociable and too dependent on internet, example I'm always on handphone, or always on internet . mass media also includes internet, TV radios. if my life had no mass media i think i would die. cos i cant imagine my life without the entertainment and the conenience mass media brings to me seriously. sure die without mass media presence

4. Overall, do you think the growing presence of mass media in our lives is a positive or negative development? Why?

There's always pros and cons for everything, but i believe strongly the growing presence is positive. it improves and makes our lives easier, gives entertainment , and information. Imagine life with no mass media, its like we all will still live in stone age . no TV or news or radio or whatever. we would still be communicating with smoke signals all if mass media didn't exist and grow. so yes, mass media i believe has shown a lot of positivity , and i believe that it will continue to do so as it develops and grows.

5. How do you think the presence of television has changed family life? Do you think the spread of the internet will have similar effects? Why or why not?

i think television has changed family life for better ( personal opinion ) cos in my family we all can watch movies and series together on the screen. its a good time for us to bond and enjoy together. for the spread of internet issue, i guess there will be upsides and downsides. i shall explain the upsides of internet, maybe if family members are far apart, internet can help connect them, etc , Facebook, Twitter, Skype , MSN. all these can help maintain relationships and bonding and even strengthen them. of course some will say internet makes us all less socialize and spend more time on internet than family, but it all depends on the individual . if the individual spends more time on internet and neglects his or her family, its his or her fault for not thinking properly. obviously with internet, an individual can also use it to change family life for the better. it all depends on how u use the internet.

6. What do you think is the most significant media development in your lifetime?

The internet of course. cos on internet u can do almost everything. from socializing to chatting, online shopping, online phone calls, video cams, online games, finding informations, entertainment and stuff. watch online movies and Facebook, twitter, emails, blogs, forums, Ebay, Youtube. so many things i can do on the internet. so yes, i think internet is the most significant development because i feel it has changed and affected my life so much for the better .

Sup everyone !! Welcome to the exciting journey of my life. haha

First of all let me introduce myself. I'm Ernie by the way.
As u can see I'm Asian obviously but a unique one in fact. ahaha
I say that because I'm mix with a quite a lot race due
to the different race of my parents and also my ancestors.
By the way my Dad's Thai and my Mom's Chinese.
So I'm basically part Chinese, Thai, Malay and Burmese.
Also, come from a bloodline of warriors from my Dad's side in Thailand.

INTEREST

Well my interest or hobby are basically gaming, eating, sleeping, prank people,
jamming, travelling, watching movies and playing sports. My main interest is Rugby.

DREAM

My dream is to travel all around the around to see the wonders of God and also
meet people of all races and learn about their culture. Basically my main dream is to
travel the world by sea. Wanna own a nice looking 'sail yacht' some day so I can use
it to travel around the world. I just loved the sea so much cause it is so peaceful
not like the mainland where there's war and suffering. Love the sea also cause of
the beautiful view and the smell of sea breeze.

AMBITIONS

Well I don't really have any job ambition right now. I'm still stuck at a crossroad
of finding out what do I really wanna be in the future. If I could I wanna be a
leader who could unite all races and countries together as one in order to end all war,
suffering and racism. Just wanna make the world peaceful ya' know where everyone
are happy.  ;)

ORIGIN

So this my hometown or 'Kampung', the town of Satun as u can see.
But I was born in Malaysia actually. haha

Thailand.

FAMILY CONDITIONS AND CHILDHOOD

My family's conditions are still okay. We are all still happy together. haha
As you can see this is a picture of me, my bro and dad. I'm on the right, dad
in the middle and the other side my bro. I have 2 more sisters by the way and
they are older than me. I'm the youngest actually out of the 4 siblings. Err didn't
upload pictures of my 2 sis and my mom here cause couldn't find a good picture as in
a none embarrassing for them. haha
Ummm. . I had a good and bitter memories of my childhood. Overall, there were more good
memories than bitter ones when I was a child cause I did a lot crazy stuff in my younger
days. hehe

3 EXPERIENCES MAKING THE MOST LASTING IMPRESSION IN MY LIFE

1st of all was finding out from my dad when I was around 9 or 10 years old that I came from
a lineage of warriors. The moment he told me that it changed my life. I began picturing myself
as a hero most of the times. haha . . . But it actually made feel very brave to stand up against people who mistreated me and who were doing bad things to others as in the weaker ones and
also the will to never give up in anything. From that moment on as time pass by I actually
attained the will of the warrior some way or another . . .

Next would be the 1st time I ate cheese. haha . . . The 1st time I ate cheese when i was 6 and
I couldn't stop eating it until now. The taste of it's soooo addictive because it tastes so divine.
Haha until today I will basically eat anything that is cooked in cheese. Even curry cuisines that
are baked with cheese. ahahahaha

Last would be the day I came to Sunway University to join the Communication course where
I met a lot interesting people in my class and became very good friends with them. They are
all so fun to be around with.   :D
